Make work project

July 31, 2009

Greg mentioned yesterday that his undergrad students always underestimated the amount of time it would take for them to pack up software for distribution…days instead of hours.  Similarly, it is easy to underestimate the amount of time it will take to pack up a manuscript for submission.  Chapter 4 of my thesis recently got rejected by Epidemiology outright over a misunderstanding about prior publication of the results (which have NOT been published) so we are trying for the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.  Mike assures me that this mouthful is commonly known as ‘Blue Journal’ which is kind of confusing, since the cover of Epidemiology is also blue.  The point of the story is that I spent four hours of the afternoon meeting the submission criteria of the latter, after having already met the submission criteria of the former for the exact same manuscript.  But everyone who publishes says to FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS, so I have.  Will submit tomorrow or Sunday, after a final look-through.
